Backcountry travelers could trigger large avalanches of recent new snow today. As the sun comes out, warming air temperatures and strong sunshine may further contribute to snowpack instability. Consider avoiding avalanche terrain near areas where clues to unstable snow are present, such as slopes filled in with wind drifted snow, snow surface cracking, roller balls, pinwheels, or recent avalanches.

    Significant amounts of new snow over the last 36 hours, combined with ridgetop winds gusting 85 to 137 mph, have brought elevated avalanche danger to the forecast area. The addition of warming air temperatures and strong sunshine as the day progresses may further contribute to snowpack instability. Consider avoiding avalanche terrain today, especially where slopes have filled in with wind drifted snow, where you encounter snow surface cracking, or see signs of recent avalanches. Warming conditions as the day progresses may make it easier to trigger avalanches.

    Expect to encounter areas of unstable snow in both wind exposed and wind protected terrain. Wind speeds reached gale force/extreme yesterday afternoon, last night, and are continuing this morning. Beyond the usual wind exposed terrain, expect to encounter areas of wind effected snow and areas of wind loading in below treeline terrain due to the strength of the winds.

    Some of today's storm slabs may take on some wet slab characteristics as skies clear and warming air temperatures combined with significant incoming solar radiation wet the snow surface. The April sun angle is now high enough to significantly affect all aspects.

    Snow surface cracking like this indicates that you have found unstable snow. Where this is the case, consider opting for slopes with a slope angle under 30 degrees until you have navigated away from avalanche terrain.

    Wet snow instability is expected to develop in response to clearing skies, strong sunshine, and warming air temperatures as the day progresses. The April sun angle is now high enough in the sky to affect all aspects. Use clues such as roller balls, pin wheels, and point release avalanches in sun exposed areas to identify slopes where wet snow instability has developed. Move around these areas with caution.

Avalanche Discussion

Before this storm, significant snowmelt occurred across the forecast area. Large areas of bare ground were present on all aspects below 7,500' to 8,000' as well as on southerly aspects at all elevations. Numerous hazards such as rocks, stumps, logs, etc are barely hidden under the recent new snow. Anticipate conditions similar to early season, where it is very easy to hit hard objects under the snow surface as you travel.
