It's quite simple. There was a foot of snow or more that accumulated over the last month and has become weak. It's sugary. The current storm is going to quickly add a lot of weight on top of that weak snow. This is an "unstable" situation.

Current Conditions: It looks like the storm is shaking out about how the weather models were predicting. The Skyline has picked up 5 to 10 inches of new snow so far. It looks like the central and southern areas are getting the most. Wind speeds are moderate from the west and temperatures are fairly warm with readings in the mid 20s.
Mountain Weather: The storm should continue through today and possibly linger into Wednesday a bit. I would not be surprised to see another foot of snow or possibly more. Wind will continue from the west with moderate speeds. Temperatures will stay in the mid to upper 20s.
