Expect rapidly changing conditions with new snow and increasing winds today. You could trigger small, fresh drifts of wind-blown snow where the most new snow accumulates. Be cautious of stiff, rounded dunes and cracking in the surface snow on the downwind sides of ridges, gullies, and trees.

    A small storm will provide new snow for strong southwest winds to drift onto leeward aspects today. While it will be windy everywhere, the most precipitation will fall in the northern parts of the forecast area near the Sierra Crest. New slabs will be small except in the most favored areas. Sheltered features like alpine couloirs, mid-slope gullies, and the downwind sides of ridges will likely be places to find drifts that crack under your weight. Extreme winds can blow snow further downslope than you’d expect, so assess steep openings below treeline for new instabilities as well. Poor visibility may make new slabs hard to identify. You could stick to lower-angled slopes and sheltered trees to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

Wind slab formation today will require new snow to blow across slopes. Conditions will change rapidly as snowfall increases into the afternoon. Precipitation today will favor the northern reaches of the forecast area near the Sierra Crest. The likelihood of triggering a sizable avalanche will diminish the further south and east you go.

Thanks to the recent round of strong winds and warm temperatures, new slabs will form atop old wind-hardened surfaces, melt-freeze crusts, or broad swathes of bare ground. Shallow snow cover means there are plenty of obstacles to injure you should you get knocked down and carried by even a small avalanche. Take that into consideration if you plan to travel in steep, leeward terrain.
