Generally stable avalanche conditions exist today. As temperatures rise throughout the day, carefully assess areas of drifted snow on west, south and east slopes before deciding to travel on them. Crampons, ice axe, and the skills to use them will be necessary for safe travel in steep terrain that remains shaded or icy.

    Although it is unlikely to trigger a large avalanche today, as temperatures rise and winds decrease, wind slabs on west, south and east aspects, will have the opportunity to transition to wet slabs or wet loose avalanche problems. Although these may be small in size, they could cause falls in steep terrain that would be highly consequential. Use extra caution near terrain traps, like narrow or deep gullies, where the depth of avalanche debris is concentrated to a single area and increases the consequences of triggering an avalanche. Bright white pockets of snow will help indicate the avalanche problem and evaluate these areas carefully. Also be cautious of travel under south-facing slopes that hold cornices at the top which could destabilize as the snowpack warms throughout the day.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday, temperatures stayed cooler than expected at elevations above 4000 feet in elevation, largely because of wind and several hours of indirect sun due to the solar eclipse. Some snow was being transported at upper elevations throughout the day. However, much of the forecast area has seen settling and consolidating from warm temperatures and sunshine over the past few days.

This morning, expect to find icy bed surfaces where the snowpack has refrozen overnight. These icy surfaces may exist throughout the day in cooler shaded areas or if the temperature quickly decreases from cloud cover. Consider the consequences of a long sliding fall in steep terrain and travel with crampons, ice axe and the mountaineering skills to use them to help reduce your risk.
