Lo esencial

The inversion conditions have left overnight temperatures at upper elevations in the upper 30's. With no hard freeze you can expect steep sunny slopes to produce wet loose slides in the early afternoon. Pockets of sensitive wind drifted snow remain on steep east-facing slopes below ridgeline.

The inversion has kept overnight temperatures at upper elevations in the upper 30's. The lack of a hard freeze overnight will allow the snowpack to soften rapidly. Daytime warming today could produce wet loose avalanches on mostly south-facing aspects >35 degrees. Look out for signs of wet loose avalanche activity such as pinwheels or roller balls.  If you step off of your machine or out of your boards and sink up to your ankles or more in wet cohesionless snow, then wet loose avalanches are likely in that area and you should avoid terrain steeper than 35 degrees.

Avalanche Discussion

The big news of the day is the lack of a freeze at upper elevations overnight. We are in an interesting weather pattern where cold air is pooling in the valleys and some high mountain basins, but the peaks are experiencing above freezing conditions. When traveling through the terrain today keep an eye on how much you are sinking into the snow. Dig down a foot or so into the snowpack and see if the snow is moist or dry. If you find wet snow to depths of 6" or more, then you should move to more conservative terrain. Avoid and stay out from underneath steep >35 degree slopes where the upper snowpack is unsupportable - sinking in above your ankles - or you observe pinwheels, rollerballs, or shallow point releases.
