Today, it is possible to trigger a wet avalanche big enough to bury a person. Firm snow in the morning will transition to wet snow as a poor refreeze and strong spring sunshine will influence the snowpack. If snow surfaces become wet and unsupportable avoid terrain above features that would be consequential if you were swept off course.
Direct solar input and a poor overnight refreeze will create conditions for wet loose avalanches to occur, but they are unlikely to be large enough to bury a person. Watch for rollerballs/ pinwheels and soft mushy snow, if you find yourself on a steep slope with unsupportable wet snow move to lower angle terrain or change aspects to find firmer snow.
The recent weather pattern has consisted of warm days and cool nights resulting in a decent refreeze where snow still exists at higher elevations. No reports of wet avalanches have been reported. Yesterday in the field high clouds played a factor in snow surface temperature. At some points it felt the cloud cover kept the slopes colder and firm while moments we questioned if clouds were affecting the snow by providing a greenhouse effect. Definitely something to keep track of in these warm spring conditions. Today, clear skies will provide direct solar input to the snow surface. Although a wet loose avalanche may not be big enough to bury a person, evaluate the terrain and consequences below you. A small wet snow avalanche or an icy patch can cause you to lose control and be swept into obstacles.
