Avalanches remain unlikely today.  Utilizing best practices associated with normal caution is recommended for travel in the backcountry avalanche terrain. A substantial increase in avalanche danger is expected to occur tomorrow.

Avalanche Discussion

Ridgetop winds out of the SW will increase in speed over the next 24 hours. Some light amounts of blowing snow may occur. The amount of snow available for drifting is limited due to numerous previous wind events since the last snowfall and melt-freeze crust on many windward aspects. Problematic areas of new wind slab development are unlikely to form today. Avalanche activity remains unlikely at this time. A substantial increase in avalanche danger is expected tomorrow as snowfall impacts the region and the likelihood of avalanches increases.

Highly variable snow surface conditions exist across the forecast area. Recent gale force SW and NE wind events have left behind firm snow surfaces just about everywhere above treeline and near treeline. Some areas are firm and smooth, some are firm and very rough. A few ridgetop areas have been scoured down to icy rain crust. Below treeline is a variable mix of wind affected snow surfaces and unconsolidated snow. Recent warming has also affected the snow surfaces on all aspects, especially at the low to mid elevations. Plan for the possibility of challenging travel conditions today.

Recent Observations:

  • No new reports of avalanches have been received since Jan 21.
  • Surface hoar has been observed in some areas over the past several days. Warming and wind today may destroy it. Snowfall forecast for tomorrow could bury any surviving areas of surface hoar and create a problematic weak layer. If you see areas of upright and intact surface hoar today, please submit an observation with a photo and location info.
  • Melt-freeze crusts exist on southerly aspects.  These crusts sit above drier snow, unaffected by previous melt making for transitional snow conditions during periods of snow surface melting.
  • Warming conditions yesterday were noted to affect the surface snow on shaded northerly aspects, making it damp and heavy, especially below 7,500' to 8,000'.
