Multiple rounds of snowfall during the past week have created dangerous avalanche conditions. The Storm Slabs formed throughout this storm are wide-spread and  easy to trigger. The snowpack requires additional time to stabilize and heal. It is strongly advised to steer clear of slopes exceeding 30 degrees, as well as areas beneath steep slopes and those with terrain traps. Exercise cautious decision-making and pay extra close attention to your route finding.

    In the last 30 hours, the Selkirk and Cabinets experienced another significant snowfall, accumulating an additional 4-12 inches of snow across the mountains. Unlike earlier in the week, temperatures have been cooler, resulting in a lighter density of snowfall from lower valleys to high elevations. Above 5200 feet, we observed considerable snow transport yesterday. This fresh layer now overlays existing storm slabs from earlier in the week, increasing stress on lower interfaces.

    Over the past 7 days, temperatures, snow intensity, and wind load have varied, creating diverse conditions at different elevations and aspects. Lower elevations encountered rain mixed with the storm last Thursday, forming a crust layer in many areas. Snowpack evaluation is challenging due to spatial variability.

    Exercise caution in evaluating both snow conditions and terrain. Today is advised to be a day to steer clear of avalanche terrain. Triggering avalanches in steep terrain is likely, and they may be large and destructive.

    While Wind Slabs are closely linked to the Storm Slab problem, they are distinct enough to warrant separate consideration. Over the past 7 days, strong to moderate south winds have built touchy slabs and cornices near ridgetops. The likelihood of large Wind Slab avalanches is very high. Swift wind transport, primarily from the southwest, has been sufficient to reload slopes that have already experienced avalanches.

    Wind Slabs will primarily be situated near ridgelines but could also be concealed on isolated terrain features. Pay attention to the snow's stiffness underfoot or under your snow machine. Exercise caution around Wind Slab areas due to the potential for propagation. Merely being in proximity to a wind-loaded slope may suffice to trigger a large avalanche. Today, focus on meticulous route finding. Discuss concerns, features, and slopes with your group, and adhere to your plan.

    While we anticipate some healing in the snowpack soon, today is not the day to test it. Enjoy the sunshine, but resist the temptation of good visibility leading you into potentially dangerous areas

Avalanche Discussion

As many of you have may heard we've had another avalanche fatality within in the Selkirk Range on March 1st. He leaves behind an amazing family and so many friends that will miss him dearly. He shared with us all so much knowledge, experience and laughter over the years.

We are not releasing details yet as an investigation is ongoing, but will be published as soon as possible.
