Avalanche Activity

As the temperature drops there will be a gradual decrease in the danger of moist avalanches as the day progresses.

The moist fresh snow of the last few days as well as the mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. The surface of the snowpack will cool hardly at all during the overcast night and will already be soft in the early morning. An appreciable danger of moist and wet avalanches exists. The moist fresh snow and the sometimes deep wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases, especially on very steep slopes, and on wind-loaded slopes.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Friday above approximately 1800 m. The new snow of the last few days is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. The new snow has bonded quite well with the old snowpack in all aspects. Wind slabs have bonded quite well with the old snowpack in all aspects. The old snowpack will be well bonded on steep sunny slopes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. On Tuesday in all aspects many small and medium-sized avalanches were reported.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
