There is a lot of soft snow in the mountains that could be moved by Moderate wind speeds.  There will be a Wind Slab avalanche problem on isolated East and NorthEast slopes at and above treeline.  Keep your observations simple:  is the wind moving the snow?  does the depth of soft snow vary as you travel over different aspects?

    I observed remarkably Calm winds today, but several stations throughout the range showed Moderate wind speeds.  There is a lot of soft snow out there available for transport, and the forecast is for increasing winds on Sunday, so I'm keeping Wind Slab as our one avalanche character.  I would expect that the problem will be on isolated slopes only.  Be wary in start zones that have a particularly large fetch (terrain that the wind can move snow from).

Avalanche Discussion

Cold temperatures at the end of last week have created very weak surface snow.  Today on Potato Hill (North facing terrain) I observed widespread surface hoar (check out the two pictures below) and near surface facets.  Of course this wasn't a problem today, but if this weak snow is preserved on shady open slopes it may be problematic once buried by next week's snowfall.

We have also been looking at a rime crust from early last week that is about 30 cm. beneath the surface.  This crust is not uniform throughout the range but seems most prominent to the South and West.  While there is some Fist hard snow in the vicinity of this crust, we haven't observed any faceting.

There are no persistent weak layers in our mid or lower snow pack.
