You may trigger a slab avalanche on lee aspects at mid and upper elevations Tuesday.  Use caution when approaching slopes steeper than 30 degrees, slabs may break in surprising ways where they build over older weaker snow.  There's no shortage of early season conditions at lower elevations and on steep southerly aspects.  Take your time while navigating exposed rocks, trees, and open creeks. 

The avalanche danger will increase on Tuesday as new snow and wind impact the Hurricane Ridge area.  At upper elevations and on lee aspects, slab avalanches may break in surprising ways where they build over weaker older snow.  This includes potentially triggering avalanches from lower angled slopes. The 12/8 crust provides a uniform bed surface throughout the terrain for avalanches to break just above the crust.  Until we know more, treat all slopes steeper than 30 degrees at mid and upper elevations with more than 6" of new snow with caution.   Small avalanches can be consequential if they rake you through exposed rocks, trees, or open creeks.  Travel conditions in many areas have become challenging following a warm and wet first half of December.  Below the stout December 8th crust, there are no layers of concern.

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
