Northerly winds on Thursday formed dense and hard slabs in terrain features that catch drifting snow, such as rollovers, gullies, and below ridges. Although wind slabs are becoming increasingly difficult to trigger, they may become more sensitive during the heat of the day, such as this large natural that ran yesterday. You can easily avoid the problem by riding soft powder in sheltered below treeline terrain. If your objectives take you into wind-affected terrain, study the drifting patterns on the snow surface to manage the problem. Drifts will be smoother and firmer, in contrast to rippled sastrugi elsewhere. Slabs will be most dangerous in terrain with large fetches, long relief, or above terrain traps.
