You can trigger small avalanches on very steep slopes. Widespread light, uncohesive surface snow will make it easy to trigger loose avalanches on slopes 40 degrees and steeper. Watch for wind transport and stiffened snow, where you may be able to trigger very shallow slab avalanches.

    Wind slab avalanches will be shallow and may be isolated to favored peaks and ridges. Westerly winds may be just strong enough to transport snow on Friday, so watch for blowing snow as an indicator. You should be able to keep from triggering slides by steering around steep roll-overs or staying off of aprons under cliffs. 

    On the 18th, gusty winds were just strong enough to drift fresh slabs in isolated areas. Observers on Silver Star Mtn triggered numerous small pockets of wind slab at middle elevations on north and northeast aspects. There may have been additional blowing snow on Thursday afternoon.

    Skiers triggered very shallow wind slab avalanches on the 18th. While they triggered a number of small pockets on Silver Star Mtn, the avalanches were otherwise isolated in the range. Middle elevations, N-NE

    Natural and human-triggered loose avalanches could be fast-running on an older melt-freeze crust on slopes near 40 degrees. While they may be small and predictable, they could push them into gullies, trees, or cliffs. If you observe long-running sluffs, practice good terrain management, stop out of the runouts in steep terrain, and use extra caution around consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Clouds will clear Thursday night before building again on Friday. You can expect more cold temperatures and westerly winds at Washington Pass. Pack extra warm layers to prepare for the cold temperatures.

On Thursday, observers reported another 2" of new snow with some breaks in the clouds and winds increasing in the afternoon. Since last weekend, observers have reported a few rounds of small wind slab avalanches and more widespread dry loose slides. While conditions aren't overly dangerous, there's enough to warrant caution to keep from triggering avalanches.

On all but southerly aspects, there's 8-12" of dry, weak snow over the upper crust. Generally, this is yielding good skiing and not a lot of concern for avalanches. If/when significant slabs are built on top, that could change. The weak snow is resting on the February 7th crust 8-12" below the surface. The layer immediately above the crust is extra weak with larger faceted grains and surface hoar. The January 28th crust is thicker and now 12-16" below the surface.  Further west of Washington Pass, the crust may be thicker and deeper with more dry snow between them. Farther east, in places like the Chewuch and Twisp River drainages, the snowpack is shallower and weaker. Here, the crusts have become faceted on shady aspects, with the upper 2/7 crust barely discernible in some northerly terrain.
