Lo esencial

Wind slabs around a foot deep may be easier to trigger above 2,500’ where they have formed on top of a layer of buried surface hoar. These commonly form below ridgelines, rollovers, and in loaded gullies. There is also a small chance of triggering a large avalanche on weak snow buried near the bottom of the snowpack.

We are sorry to report a fatal avalanche accident that occurred outside of Girdwood on the afternoon of March 4, 2025. Three people were caught and killed in an avalanche in the west fork of the Twentymile River. We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and families of all parties involved.     Wind slab avalanches up to a foot deep will be possible above treeline and may be sitting on top of a layer of buried surface hoar. This is the same layer that has been creating many avalanches in Turnagain Pass. For now there is much less snow over this weak layer so the avalanches will be smaller. It is possible on wind loaded slopes that these avalanches may be large enough to bury someone where the slab is deeper or if it is wider than expected. 

    Wind slabs are more common in steep terrain below ridgelines, rollovers (convexities), and in loaded gullies. Look out for shooting cracks, collapsing, and snow that becomes stiff underneath you. These are clues you are traveling on snow that has not bonded well to the old snow. The safest option is to look for slopes that are sheltered from the wind.

    There is a small chance of triggering a large avalanche on a layer of weak snow buried close to the ground. Keep this in the back of your mind today if you get in upper elevations. It's unlikely but areas where the snow is thin (near exposed rocks and on ridgelines) will be the most likely place to collapse these weak layers which could trigger an avalanche that takes out the whole slope.
