Snowmobile- and skier-triggered avalanches are likely to occur today in steep terrain. Avalanches may be triggered both in areas where the wind has built drifts and in areas sheltered from the wind. Due to the nature of the weak snow in our area, you don't need to be on a steep slope to trigger a slide. Avalanches can be triggered remotely—from below, above, and to the sides of steeper terrain.

We are sorry to report that a fatal avalanche occurred yesterday in the Salt River Range. The preliminary report can be found here. Our condolences go out to those involved.

    The snowpack on Togwotee Pass is in a tenuous state.  Loading over the last week has been gradual.  New snow in the form of slabs sits on a weak base. Triggers in the form of snowmobiles, skiers and riders will be enough to tip the scales and produce avalanches 1 to 3 feet in depth. Approach all terrain with suspicion and use safe travel practices. Only expose one person at a time, stop in islands of safety and communicate your plans with your party. Be alert to the potential for remote triggering and for avalanches to propagate across entire slopes. Conditions are dangerous and warrant respect.

Avalanche Discussion

Before snowfall that began on Jan 5, the Togwotee Pass zone endured a month-long stretch of mostly dry and cold weather. The weather pattern formed uncharacteristically weak snow throughout the area. It remains likely to trigger a deadly avalanche. These avalanches may break wider than you expect or connect two pieces of steeper terrain with lower-angled features that may appear friendlier but, in fact, are not. Extremely careful route-finding is necessary today and in the coming days. It will take time to reduce the likelihood of triggering an avalanche. This is a good time to stick to lower-angled terrain and allow the snowpack time to adjust to this most recent load.
