Lo esencial

Heightened avalanche danger on leeward north, northeast, and northwest facing slopes at and above treeline and at ridgelines for today. It is possible for a person to trigger a touchy windslab avalanche on steep leeward facing terrain today. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully before venturing onto steep leeward terrain in the alpine.

Moderate to strong south and southwest winds were present in the mountains yesterday afternoon and last night. There is plenty of soft snow available to be transported by the wind onto north and northeast facing leeward terrain near ridgelines and at treeline to form windslabs in locations that were affected by  the wind. Yesterday I observed moderate south and southwest winds at and above treeline in the Western Wallowas. I saw a lot of snow being transported from windward south facing slopes onto leeward north facing slopes. Expect to find potentially sensitive windslabs on leeward facing terrain and , in particular, north/northeast facing terrain at and above treeline and near ridgelines today.

Photo taken yesterday in the Wallowas. You can see the snow being transported onto leeward facing terrain  by the strong south winds. Definite red flag !

Yesterday I was able to trigger small sluffs on very steep terrain on north facing slopes below treeline, particularly on convex terrain features. Be wary of this when recreating on very steep north facing terrain today. Even a small sluff can carry a recreationalist into a very undesirable terrain trap with undesirable consequences.
