The avalanche danger remains generally LOW for today. Anticipate a rising avalanche danger as storms move through this week especially if we see more snow and wind than anticipated.
Snow and Weather
Current Conditions: Saturday was a gorgeous day to be out recreating in the mountains with mild temperatures, light wind and good riding conditions in many areas. Overnight temperatures are unusually warm with most mountain stations hovering in the mid to upper 30s.
Snowpack: The snowpack is currently stable. The term stable shouldn't be confused with the word "strong" though. As I travel around, I find areas with strong snow but I also find areas with weak snow deeper in the pack. These areas with weak snow are currently stable but could become unstable if we add enough new snow. Areas with weak snow are places where the snowpack has remained shallow with around 3 feet or less total snow depth. If you are traveling around and notice that your skis or poles or sled track sinks through the snowpack into sugary snow, these are areas that should be avoided if they get rapidly loaded with a significant amount of new snow. It's possible that these areas of weak snow will never become unstable this winter but it's also possible they could become dangerous. It all depends on future weather trends.
Mountain Weather: For today, we'll see some increasing clouds and increasing southerly wind ahead of the next storm system that moves through tonight and Monday. This is not going to be a huge storm for us. I'm expecting about 6 inches of new snow by Tuesday, maybe a bit more in the most favored locations. It is going to get cold though with moutain temperatures in the single digits. Another system will move through on Thursday bringing a few more inches of snow. Yet another system is shaping up for next Sunday.
