Mount Shasta

The avalanche danger is LOW. Always watch for isolated wind loading when wind is present. Climbing conditions are good. Wear a helmet and be heads up for falling rime ice on the upper mountain with the warm temperatures expected.
Avalanche Discussion
Climbers, greetings and welcome! We are guessing that the long weekend and good weather will lure in a few to the mountain. Awesome! Bunny Flat is the only open trailhead at this time. One may access other trailheads, but will need a good set of legs or a snowmobile. South side climbing routes are in good shape, but it's still winter. A climb of Mt. Shasta in the winter is a level up. Hopefully you catch a good weather window. But, don't forget that Shasta is capable of severe weather and real mountain hazards. The bottom line is, be prepared. Wind chill can be brutal. Know how to use navigation tools in case of whiteout. Smooth, icy snow is common...slips and falls can result in a slide for life. Know how to operate an ice axe and crampons. Avalanche danger (carry a beacon, shovel and probe) and post-holing is possible. Wear a helmet, watch for falling rime ice. Think it through, be honest with both your own, and partner's skills. Have the courage to turn around. Most importantly, enjoy nature and have fun!
A summit pass (req'd above 10k feet), wilderness permit and human waste bag are REQUIRED to climb Mt. Shasta. You can self-issue all of these things at the Bunny Flat trailhead, 24/7.
It's a GO! Join us on Saturday, January 15th at 9:00 a.m. at the Deer Mountain warming hut for a snowmobile specific avalanche awareness and companion rescue clinic. Registration is not required.
