Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Stability will generally be good with firm surface layers developing above 900 metres, later above 700 metres as the freezing level lowers. Snowfall and drifting deposits will form fresh unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations on West to North aspects above 900 metres later in the day. Fragile cornices will start to develop. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Light precipitation arriving before daylight will get heavier from mid-morning. This will initially fall as snow above 850 metres, later falling as snow above 650 metres. The freezing level will lower from 900 metres overnight, reaching 700 metres by the end of the afternoon. Light winds will increase to become strong South-Easterly during the heaviest of the snowfall. Observed Weather Influences: Light snow showers above 900 metres during the morning, drier later. Moderate, easing to light South-Easterly winds. Freezing level around 1000 metres. ObservedSnowStability: A gently rising freezing level has encouraged consolidation with much snow now demonstrating good stability. In wind sheltered locations on West to North aspects above 950 metres, deeper accumulations contain moderately bonded layers. Large cornices are present above these aspects. Wind exposed slopes are firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
