New snow and strong winds will combine to create very dangerous avalanche conditions. At the mid and upper elevations new dense slabs lie upon a variety of slick old snow surfaces. Dense slab avalanches are likely to release naturally on a variety of aspects and human triggered avalanches are very likely. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended at the upper elevations. Expert route finding and conservative decisions are essential for safe travel at the mid elevations. At the upper reaches of the lower elevations pockets of dense slab could be human triggered in very steep north facing avalanche starting zones.

    At the mid and upper elevations and in isolated areas at the upper reaches of the lower elevations strong west winds will created dense surface slabs up to three feet in depth. These slabs lie upon slick old snow surfaces. Natural releases are likely and human-triggered avalanches are very likely on a variety of aspects at the mid and upper elevations. Slab avalanches that release on steep northerly aspects at the upper elevations could step down to the ground with depths to four feet.

    Strong west winds and new snow will continue to increase the load upon deep persistent hard slabs that exist on northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet. These slabs are likely to release naturally or in response to the failure of dense surface slabs or human triggers and will fail on a weak layer of faceted snow which exists at the base of the snow pack.

Avalanche Discussion

Snowfall will continue through this evening before gradually tapering off after midnight. The heaviest snowfall will likely occur when a cold front sweeps across the region. On Tuesday skies will be slowly clearing with periods of light snow tapering to flurries. Temperatures will be near 10 degrees in the mountains in the early morning hours and drop towards zero during the day.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE at the mid and upper elevations. Dense surface slabs one to three feet in depth could be human triggered on steep wind loaded aspects. On northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet these slabs could step down to the ground. The general avalanche hazard below an elevation of 7,000 feet is expected to be LOW.
