The most problematic areas are steep, upper-elevation slopes with a cohesive slab of snow above weaker snow layers. You may find deeper, wind-drifted areas that span adjacent terrain features on northerly and easterly-facing slopes. Most slides will break near the surface, but some may break deeper producing a larger slide. Use caution if traveling above terrain traps or cliff bands where a smaller avalanche could magnify the consequences of getting caught. Wind-sheltered slopes around 30 degrees, without steeper terrain overhead, offer safer travel options.
