Avalanche Activity

At elevated altitudes a dangerous avalanche situation will be encountered in some regions.

The fresh snow and local mostly small wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence in particular on steep north, east and south facing slopes above approximately 2000 m. These are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack and natural avalanches can indicate the danger. Several small and medium-sized wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation, in particular on steep sunny slopes in all altitude zones.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of the weekend is lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. Up to 50 cm of snow, and up to 60 cm in some localities, fell in the last three days above approximately 2000 m. Also in all regions above approximately 2500 m snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
