Avalanche Activity

GC 9/2 Snow showers, W gales, unstable windslab gullies and N-E-SE aspects where old snow underlies, fragile cornices. Haz Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: New snow and Westerly winds will form areas of unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations mainly above 850 metres where old snow underlies. Areas most affected will be sheltered gullies and slopes with a North through East to South-East aspect, in particular gully tops and steep scarp slopes. Fragile cornices will form above some of these aspects. Windward slopes will be scoured and icy where old snow exists. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow, persistent for a time later on Wednesday evening, will become showery overnight and through Thursday. Winds will be strong to gale force generally Westerly. The freezing level will be around 700 metres. Observed Weather Influences: It has been mainly dry with strong to gale force South-Westerly winds. Colder conditions affected the area overnight. The freezing level today has risen to around 1100 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Colder overnight conditions have further consolidated the snowpack which is now generally firm, well bonded and stable. Greatest snow amounts exist mainly on North to East aspects above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
