Avalanche Activity

Snowdrift up above, wet snow down below

In the Allgau, moderate avalanche danger prevails. Fresh snowdrift accumulations are the main problem above the treeline: they can in some places be triggered even by the weight of one sole skier and release a slab avalanche. Danger zone occur esp. in steep ridgeline terrain in N/E/S aspects and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Frequency and size of danger zones increase with ascending altitude. Above the treeline, releases can grow to medium size. At low altitudes the wet snow is a problem. Loose-snow avalanches can trigger naturally in all aspects on steep slopes during the morning hours. They generally remain small-sized.

Snowpack Structure

At high altitudes the snowfall will continue. Strong winds are transporting the fresh snow, generating more and more snowdrift accumulations. In wind-protected terrain the fresh snow is being deposited atop drifts and soft layers - it is prone to triggering. Inside the snowdrift accumulations are weak layers. At low altitudes, rainfall and thawing will set in Sunday morning, the fresh snowfall from recent days will become wet, forfeit its firmness.

Tendency

Wet snow will soon be the main problem.
