Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche in drifted slabs at upper elevations. Soft drifts over 8 inches deep, or hard drifts that support your weight are the most suspect. Avalanches can step down into older, dense drifts and grow larger. Cracking in the new snow is a sign you could trigger a slide. Look for and avoid slopes with drifted pillows directly below ridges and in gullies. Look for wind-sheltered slopes or slopes less than about 35 degrees for safer riding.
