The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Large, dangerous slabs lie upon a persistent, weak base of faceted snow. Backcountry travelers venturing onto steep slopes could trigger these slabs, resulting in serious consequences. A powerful winter storm will start to impact the region by early afternoon. New snowfall, strong southwest winds, and warming temperatures will increase the hazard later in the day.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Southwesterly ridgetop winds at 20 to 35 miles per hour will continue through Saturday night, and then increase during the day on Sunday as snow showers start to develop. Three to five inches of new snow could be seen by Sunday evening. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the low teens before rising into the low 20s on Sunday.The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain MODERATE in the Teton area where 6 to 18 inch soft slabs could be triggered by backcountry travelers in steep, wind-loaded terrain.The general avalanche hazard in the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide Trails Area is also expected to remain MODERATE. Backcountry travelers could trigger slab avalanches on steep slopes that are underlain by weak, faceted snow. These avalanches have potential to step down to the ground.The general avalanche hazard in the Greys River/Southwest Trails Area is expected to remain CONSIDERABLE. In steep terrain, backcountry travelers could trigger dangerous slabs lying upon a base of weak, faceted snow.In all areas, the general avalanche hazard will increase during the day on Sunday as new snow and strong winds combine to create new surface slabs and add weight to existing weak layers.
