The most dangerous slopes are where you find cohesive slabs of wind-drifted snow resting on top of weak, cohesionless snow near the ground. You are most likely to encounter this dangerous setup on northeast through east to southeast-facing slopes near ridgelines and at upper elevations. Identify and avoid steep, wind-drifted slopes on the lee sides of ridgelines to reduce your chances of being caught in an avalanche.
