The combination of new snow, wind, and buried weak layers will make human triggered avalanches possible today at the upper elevations. Cracking within wind drifted snow and collapsing of the snowpack are warning signs of heightened avalanche conditions.

    The November 27 layer is now buried 1-2 feet below the surface of the snow in most locations. In areas where October snow turned into depth hoar slab depths are in the 2-4 foot range. These weak layers are present on all aspects and elevations but stiff continuous slabs are more likely to be found at the upper elevations. More wind is expected today, potentially stiffening slabs and increasing depths in leeward terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday the Togwotee Pass zone picked up 1 inch of snow and ridge top winds were out of SSW around 20 mph.

In a general sense there are plenty of weak layers to be found in the Togwotee Pass zone but uniform slabs are harder to come by. Areas that do contain firm continuous slabs of snow are likely to have weak layers residing below.

So far Triple Dip La Nina conditions are treating the Tetons favorably. Current snow water equivalent measurements show Grand Targhee to be 114% of median value while Phillips Bench sits at 130% of median. The Togwotee Pass snotel is at 95% of median and Willow Creek in the Salt River Range is 135% of median.
