New snow combined with mainly SW to W winds over the past 24 hours drifted snow, filling it in along the downwind side of ridgetops and into gully features. Cohesive slabs of wind drifted snow were unstable yesterday and may linger today. These wind slabs are expected at less than 1 foot in thickness, existing mainly on slopes below or adjacent to cornice features.
Use clues such cornices and locally deeper areas of wind drifted snow to identify the locations where wind slabs exist. Warming conditions today could increase the sensitivity to triggering in some locations. Move around these areas with caution.
(3/2/2025) A shallow (size D1) wind slab avalanche that caught and carried a skier yesterday on a slope adjacent to a cornice feature. Talking Mountain, Echo Summit area, CA
