Avalanche Activity

Watch out for slabs of new snow!

Moderate avalanche danger (2nd degree) is declared in the high altitudes of the High and Western Tatras. During the last period of snowfall, up to 20 cm of new snow fell locally at the highest altitudes. On the mountains above the forest belt, strong north to north-west winds have blown, transporting this snow to the leeward slopes of southern orientations. Here, unstable snow slabs and pillows of varying thickness and hardness will form. Especially under saddles, rock walls, in moguls and steep couloirs. Avalanche release is possible especially with high additional loads. During the day on sunlit slopes, splays or small avalanches can form, but especially in steep rocky terrain.

Snowpack Structure

Locally up to 20 cm of new snow fell. At altitudes up to 1500 m above sea level there is only patchy snow cover.

Tendency

Gradually stabilizing.
