Avalanche Activity

Moist and wet avalanches and gliding avalanches and moist snow slides are the main danger. New snow and wind slabs above approximately 2300 m.

As a consequence of a strong wind from westerly directions, mostly small wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as at elevated altitudes. Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines above the tree line, as well as at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Avalanches can be released in the old snowpack. As a consequence of warming wet and gliding avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Caution and restraint are advisable.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of rising temperatures and partly cloudy skies a crust formed on the surface during the last few days. This applies in particular below approximately 2300 m. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. The wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack.

Tendency

The conditions will foster a gradual strengthening of the snowpack during the course of the night.
