Avalanche Activity

GC13/4 Light snow unstable windslab mainly sheltered gullies+steep W-N-E slopes850m+fragile cornices prone to collapse Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will exist in wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be in sheltered summit gullies and on steeper scarp slopes mainly above 850 metres with a West through North to Easterly aspect. Greatest instabilities will be where deep accumulations form on the older existing snowpack. Fragile cornices above these aspects will be prone to collapse. Where exposed, the older snowpack will be firm and icy in places. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow will affect the area overnight and later on Thursday, amounts are not expected to be great. Winds will be fresh generally Easterly overnight decreasing to moderate West-South-West through the day. The freezing level will be around 900-1000 metres. Observed Weather Influences: New snow overnight and this morning affected slopes mainly above 400 metres. The new snow has been driven on by strong, generally South to South-West winds giving some heavy drifting. The freezing level is around 800 metres. ObservedSnowStability: New snow and wind transport of existing deposits have formed unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations are in sheltered summit gullies and on steep slopes with a North-West through North to Easterly aspect mainly above 850 metres. Greatest instabilities exist where deeper accumulations have formed on the older existing snowpack. Fragile cornices are forming above these aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
