Lo esencial

Generally safe avalanche conditions in the Blues today with heightened avalanche danger on specific terrain features. As the sun comes out and temperatures rise above freezing any new snow we might receive during the day will become unstable. When these instabilities become apparent it is time to move to lower angle and shaded terrain less than 30 degrees.

Up to 2" of new snow is expected for the Blue Mountains this morning into this afternoon. If the sun comes out as forecasted expect to see signs of snow surface instability in the form of roller balls, point releases, and pin wheels. If you observe these signs of instability when you are out recreating today I suggest staying on or moving to low angle slopes less than 30 degrees and moving to slopes that are in the shade.

  • Wind Slabs

Light to moderate west winds are forecasted along with about 2" of new snow today. If this combination of wind and snow materializes expect to see windslabs form on leeward east facing terrain. On terrain steeper than 30 degrees these slabs will be sensitive to the weight of a human especially if the sun comes out and temperatures rise above freezing.
