The Avalanche Hazard in the West Central Mountains is MODERATE today.  Natural Avalanches are unlikely, but Human-triggered avalanches are possible in the upper 2 feet of the snowpack where this weeks snow buried surface hoar.  Variable Winds have formed shallow soft slabs in exposed and leeward terrain that are showing signs of poor bonding to the snow below. Watch for signs of drifting and scultpting, and avoid steep wind loaded terrain just below cornices and ridgelines.

Steep, sustained, long, exposed big slopes with consequences are not good terrain choices right now. Utilize Good and safe travel techniques like spreading out, exposing only one person at a time to terrain steeper than 30 degrees, and keeping your eyes on your partners that should all be carrying a transciever, shovel, and probe. Stay safe and enjoy the good snow with safe terrain choices!

    Our upper 3 feet of our snowpack holds the greatest threat right now, a layer of surface hoar formed on the surface, and now sits under about 80cm or 2.5 feet of snow. This layer was very reactive last Saturday on East and North aspects where ski cuts quickly and easily triggered D1-D2 avalanches outside Brundage Ski Resort. Protected Northerly terrain has preserved the crystals enough where test results are worthy indicators that the possibility of triggering a large avalanche still exists. Thin, and rocky areas of the snowpack may fail easier where you can put more stress on the weak layer. If you trigger the upper snowpack, the potential to get deeper old weak layers to step down and fail exists...the take home is that we are still not choosing big terrain that could produce large avalanches as buried surface hoar is the common wild card that is responsible for many avalanche fatalities. Being extra cautious and bulding greater margins of errror are good practices with persistent weak layers that are hard to predict, and have serious consequences.

    Winds have been light to sometimes moderate and have varied from NE to South, and have gusted enough to transport some of the soft snow on the surface. Bonding of recent wind slabs is poor to not at all. 

    Avoid steep (over 30 degrees) wind loaded terrain, especially just below ridgelines and cornices. Cornices are getting big enough and hanging over on leeward sides waiting for a person to make them fail. Give ample room, and stay far back from the edge as they can break much farther back than one might assume.

     

    Shallow wind slabs failing on isolation Friday on a SW exposed ridge on Granite Mtn that were poorly bonded and showed no signs or cracking while hiking on skis.

2021 Virtual Silent Auction Fundraiser February 14 @ 8:00 am - February 20 @ 9:00 pm

***Today is the last day to get in on some good items like skis and avalanche transcievers...This is our major fundraiser for the 2021 season.  In lieu of holding an in-person event, we are having a silent auction that begins February 14 and will run all week with final bids closing at 9 pm on Saturday, February 20th.  Our fundraising goal is $5000.  This will go to additional forecasts in 2022, continued maintenance of our beacon training park, fund the future forecaster's scholarship program, continued maintenance of the granite mountain weather station, and provide avalanche education to the community. Yesterday our neigbors to the South in the Sawtooth range had an avalanche fatality where a snowmobiler triggered a wind slab and got drug through the trees, unable to survive the trauma. Our hearts are heavy...The most repeated message from Avalanche Centers across the Western US right now is "avoid steep slopes", with human-triggered avalanches and avalanche fatalities continuing to stack up, the best advice is to pay attention to your slope angles.  There is a huge difference between a 30-degree slope and a 37-degree slope in terms of triggering an avalanche.   As you travel, try to gauge the slope angle and keep an eye on your partners.   If you see or trigger avalanche activity, please take the time to snap a picture and note the approximate elevation and aspect, you can submit an observation on our website. Getting your info helps forecasters and other users get a better picture of the conditions throughout our mountains. Please be mindful of other users in the mountains, and where you are at. There are closures for motorized travel in and around the local ski areas, in the Lick Creek Canyon,  Granite Mtn, Jug Mountain, and other areas throughout our region.  Check out the Winter Travel Map to find out where you can shred on your sled or moto.  Not all of these areas are signed, it is your responsibility to know where these closures exist.
