Avalanche Activity

Gradual decrease in danger of moist and wet avalanches as the temperature drops.

The weather conditions fostered a substantial stabilisation of the snowpack. As a consequence of falling temperatures, the natural avalanche activity will gradually decrease. In particular on shady slopes the avalanches can penetrate even deep layers and reach medium size in some cases. They can as before be released, in particular by large loads. Caution is to be exercised in particular on very steep slopes, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. There is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.

Snowpack Structure

In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In addition, only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. Towards its surface, the snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. Some snow will fall in some localities. The rain will give rise as the day progresses to slight moistening of the snowpack in some cases in particular at low altitude.
