Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Areas of weakly bonded windslab will persist with further deposits continuing to develop with the strong winds. Unstable accumulations in wind sheltered terrain mainly above 850m particularly in sheltered gullies and on steep slopes with a NW to NE aspect. Fragile cornices will also exist above similar areas. Cross loading may affect some other wind sheltered aspects. Wind exposed slopes will be firm and often icy with better stability. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Staying dry, the freezing level will be around 400 metres for most of the period but will rise to around 700 metres by the end of the day. The strong winds will remain South-Easterly but start to ease in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Last night the winds became South-Easterly and strengthened to near gale force these continued through today and were particularly strong over the higher summits. It has remained quite cold, the freezing level was around 400 metres and it was a dry day but with a high windchill element. ObservedSnowStability: Wind redistribution is rapidly forming new areas of poorly bonded windslab in wind sheltered terrain. Most affected locations are wind sheltered gullies, steep slopes and coire rims with a North-West through North to North-East aspect above 850 metres. Fragile cornices exist above similar aspects. Avalanche activity noted today. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
