Avalanche Activity

LO for 12/3. Fresh unstable windslab mainly on W-N-E aspects above 900m. Cornices! Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh, unstable windslab will develop overnight mainly on West to North aspects above 900 metres and during the day mainly on North to East aspects above 1100 metres. Stability will be poor in all these locations and avalanches, generally small, will be likely as the temperature rises and snow turns to rain. Fragile cornices will be prone to collapse. The old snowpack will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong South-East winds overnight, veering to become South-West in the morning, increasing slightly in the afternoon. Snow overnight to low levels will gradually turn to rain during the day with snow only on the highest summits by the end of the afternoon. The freezing level will rise from around 350 metres to above the summits. Observed Weather Influences: It was a cold, dry day with light to moderate South-South-Easterly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of shallow but poorly bonded windslab are present mainly on South-West through West to North aspects above 900 metres. The older snowpack is very firm and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
