New snow and strong winds have created heightened avalanche conditions. Backcountry travelers could trigger pockets new wind slab in steep, wind-loaded terrain above 8,000 feet. As the day warms, extended periods of sunshine could make these slides more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects. Monitor the extent that daily warming is having on snow surfaces, and avoid terrain with obvious signs of wind loading.

    Five to seven inches of new snow with up to 0.8 inches of snow water equivalent has combined with strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds to create pockets of wind slab in the upper elevations. These slabs, with depths of six to twelve inches, formed on sun crusts and areas of surface hoar. In isolated areas, deeper pockets may have developed. Skiers and riders could trigger these slabs in steep, wind-loaded avalanche terrain. At the mid elevations, isolated pockets of shallow slab might be found.

Avalanche Discussion

A high pressure ridge over Eastern Idaho will move east during the evening hours. West winds will increase overnight. Areas of light snowfall will develop by morning and increase in intensity during the day. Three to six inches of new snow are possible in favored locations by tomorrow evening. This snowfall will be accompanied by west winds with average speeds of 25 to 30 and gusts to 45 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the 20s in the mountains and in the upper 20s and 30s in the valleys.In the Teton area the general avalanche is expected to be LOW in the morning and be on the increase at the higher elevations during the day. Isolated areas of MODERATE hazard associated with buried, persistent weak layers exist in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas.
