An Avalanche Warning for the mountains of Western Wyoming is in effect through midnight tonight. New snowfall which at the low elevations may possibly be mixed with rain and strong winds will add additional loads to an already unstable snowpack. Natural activity is certain today. Slabs depths may reach three feet and once initiated, are likely to entrain the underlying faceted snow. Widespread activity is expected. Yesterday many natural and easily triggered avalanches with 18-24" crowns occurred on all elevations and aspects. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED TODAY.

Approximately twenty inches of snow containing over three inches of water has fallen on a weak faceted snow pack since Tuesday morning. Avalanche activity has been widespread on all elevations and aspects yesterday and today. Details of recent activity can be viewed on jhavalanche.org Another system is to deposit significant snowfall overnight into Saturday morning. Cold air will arrive on the back end of the storm with highs tomorrow expected to be in the teens. Very strong west winds are expected overnight before decreasing to twenty to thirty mile per hour averages that are expected during the day. The avalanche hazard will be HIGH. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED. Natural activity is likely and skiers and riders will have the ability to easily trigger soft slabs to three foot depths on all elevations and aspects.
