Dense storm snow, warm temperatures and increasing winds will create dangerous avalanche conditions above 5,000' in elevation today. The new snow will form dense slabs and bond poorly with the existing snowpack. Avalanches will be easily triggered in steep terrain. Avoid travelling in or below steep terrain Tuesday!

    Dense and heavy snowfall has created a cohesive slab that is resting on a mix of sugary snow and firm crust layers. These surfaces developed during the first two weeks of March and will create a poor bonding surface for new snow. The new snow combined with increasing winds and warm temperatures will create dangerous avalanche conditions above 5,000 in elevation. Storm slabs will likely be thicker in the Cabinets versus the Purcell Range. These storm slabs will thicken and become more hazardous throughout the day Tuesday as the snow continues to fall and winds increase out of the southwest. Anticipate slabs to be thicker on north and easterly locations where the winds have tranported fresh snow onto leeward terrain.

    Modest amounts of loose snow is resting on a firm crust layer below 5,000' in elevation. With heavy rain and warm temperatures "wet loose" slides will be easily triggered at lower elevations. These slides will be small, but may harbor the potential to knock you off you feet or machine in steep terrain today. This problem should diminish as cooler temperatures return to the area on Wednesday.

Avalanche Discussion

If you watched this video you can see how sensitive and weak the upper layer of our snowpack is. Since this was filmed we have added at least another 7-9" of dense snow on top of this slab. Toss in some rising temperatures and increasing winds to this recipe and we have prime conditions for starting avalanches. Area wide we have a stout crust layer capped by weak and sugary snow, this combination sets us up for poor bonding conditions as the new snow stacks up at upper elevations. In steep terrain today you can expect to see avalanches occuring naturally and they will be easily triggered by humans. It is very much a "no-brainer" kind of a day. If you choose to go out, keep it conservative and stick to low-angle slopes and avoid being below steep terrain and avalanche paths.
