Lo esencial

Generally stable snowpack conditions and LOW avalanche danger are present on the Kootenai today. However, stay alert to the potential for small pockets of wind slab to develop on north and east aspects of the highest peaks as the day progresses.

On Monday night the Cabinets picked up 1-2" of snow with another 2-7" predicted to fall through the day on Tuesday. Predicted winds gusting out of the southwest up to 20 mph will have the potential to build small wind slabs in higher terrain on north and east facing aspects. In many locations there is a thin layer of crust on the surface that will make these small wind slabs more reactive as they build and become cohesive during the day. While these slabs will be small, you will want to pay attention to the surface of the snowpack before you jump into steep terrain with high consequences. Stiff and slabby snow that cracks under skis or machine will be your clues that wind slabs are present.

Most of the snowpack was capped by a thin melt-freeze crust on Monday that will be slow to break down today. But by afternoon the mild temperatures will likely loosen up the surface of the snowpack and create the potential for wet-loose snow to begin running down the slopes in very steep terrain at elevations below 4,500'. Much like the potential wind slab issue, any potential avalanches produced will be too small to bury a human, but worth paying attention to in high consequence terrain.
