Lo esencial

Snow behaving badly has been hard to come by. The feet and feet of snow that fell over the first few weeks of the month has settled out nicely. Main hazards in the backcountry currently include any new wind loading from the north wind, huge cornices along ridgelines and deep, human gobbling tree wells. Pay attention to changing conditions as you adventure about, and always watch for red flags of avalanche danger. Don't be blinded by mostly low avalanche danger, particularly if you plan to venture onto steep, alpine slopes.

Gusty north wind will continue to blow on Mount Shasta, especially at mid and upper mountain levels. Older slabs could be dense and wind compacted and stubborn to trigger. New wind slabs may be softer and more sensitive. In addition, huge cornices have formed along many ridgelines. Watch for wind blowing snow, note where it is collecting, and avoid those slopes.
