Lo esencial

Fresh dense snow and shifting winds over the past two days have created wind slabs on all aspects above tree line that may be sensitive to a human trigger.  Sunshine later today could lead to loose-wet point releases and loosen fresh deposits on SE-SW-W aspects, particularly near rock-bands. MODERATE avalanche danger exists above tree line especially in the central forecast area near Mammoth and June that received much greater amounts of new snow, while LOW danger exists near tree line and below.

    Strong SW winds formed thick wind slabs especially around the Mammoth area which received up to 1.5ft of dense snow between Thursday night and Saturday morning with over 2” of water content.  Mammoth Ski Patrol triggered many large avalanches with explosives yesterday with crowns as tall as 4’.  Two sizeable human triggered avalanches occurred in the negatives behind June yesterday as well, with at least one skier being caught. Winds have now shifted out of the NE, meaning reactive wind slabs today may be found on all aspects above tree line and could range from fresh and sensitive to larger and much more stubborn.  Carefully assess slopes above tree-line before committing to consequential terrain. Sunshine today could also loosen fresher deposits on sunnier aspects.   

    Skier triggered wind slab avalanche in the negatives yesterday around noon. Skier was caught and went for a ride, but fortunately was able to ski away.

    Even though temperatures won’t get too warm today, when the clouds clear full sunshine could loosen fresh snow deposits and lead to loose-wet point releases on sunny aspects (SE-S-SW-W).  These are most likely to originate near rock bands. Watch for signs like rollerballs and wet sticky snow that could mean a larger loose-wet slide may be possible, and to move to lower angle or shadier terrain.  

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday's avalanche activity was a bit spooky, with how dense the wind slabs were.  Even yesterday slabs were stubborn, meaning that it took greater force or an impact in a thinner area of slab to trigger a failure.  Keep this in mind, and be aware that the side walls of gullies where a slab may be thinner may be a more likely trigger point than the middle of a chute where snow deposition is greater.

-3/19 – Mammoth – Red Cone: 3-6” new snow, winds, Small reactive windslab near treeline, small pinwheels at lower elevations.

-3/19 – Mammoth – Lakes Basin: 4-6” new snow, cornice development below treeline.

-3/19 – Mammoth – Lakes Basin: Isolated cracking below treeline, snow and wind.

-3/19 – June – Ghost Trees: New snow, wind, 4” slabs cracking below treeline but limited propagation.
