Lo esencial

Low hazard does not mean no hazard exists. Isolated pockets of wind slab formed during this week's snowfall events exist at the upper elevations. Skiers or riders could trigger these slabs in wind loaded terrain features near ridge crests and cliffy areas. Remember that even small slides can carry consequences in unforgiving terrain. At the mid and low elevations, the snowpack is stable and avalanches are unlikely. Grand Teton National Park is closed. Practice social distancing directives and follow other current health care protocols.

At the upper elevations, isolated pockets of wind slab, formed by southwest to northwest winds, could be triggered with 4 to 18 inch depths. Yesterday, a skier triggered a small slide in the Snake River Mountains. These slabs could become more sensitive in areas where they are rapidly warmed by increasing temperatures and direct sunlight.

Avalanche Discussion

Mostly dry conditions and partly cloudy skies are in store for Sunday. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the mid-teens before rising to near freezing during the day. Westerly ridgetop winds will range from 5 to 15 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Low on Sunday. Above 9,000 feet, skiers and riders might be able to trigger a small, isolated pocket of slab in very steep, wind loaded terrain. Daytime warming and sunshine could make these slabs more susceptible to failure as the day progresses. The snowpack is mostly stable below 9,000 feet. As the day warms, wet loose slides involving the new snowfall will become possible on sunlit aspects. Practice social distancing, and keep in mind the extra burden to the healthcare community that a serious accident would create.
