Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Moderately bonded windslab will be present in wind sheltered locations on North-West through North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Steeper locations such as gully tops and sharply defined corrie rims will be most affected. Small fragile cornices will be present. Old snow will refreeze overnight, possessing firm surface layers by morning. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very light snowfall above 500 metres overnight. Continuing through the day at increasingly higher altitudes only. Strong West-South-Westerly winds until midday, backing South-South-Westerly during the afternoon. 500 metre freezing level overnight, rising after day break to reach 1150 metres by the end of the period. Observed Weather Influences: Light snow showers during the morning, brighter weather in the afternoon. Gale force Southerly winds veering Westerly. Freezing level fluctuating between 850 and 950 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Steeper wind sheltered locations on North-West through North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres are holding moderately bonded deposits. Gully tops and sharply defined corrie rims are most affected. Fresh accumulations continue to form due to redistribution. Wind exposed locations are scoured and firm. Deposits below 800 metres are thawing. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
