Avalanche Activity

GC 8/2 Old snowpack firm and stable New windslab and cornices developing late afternoon mainly on N to E aspects above 850m. Haz Low

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will remain generally well bonded and stable in all locations. New localised areas of shallow but poorly bonded windslab will start to develop later in the afternoon. These deposits are not expected to be extensive, mainly affecting steep wind sheltered locations on North to East aspects above 850 metres. Fragile cornices will also start to develop on similar aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight, the freezing level will rise above the summits where it will remain through most of the period, it will fall again towards the end of the afternoon to around 600 metres. Dry conditions through most of the day, some light snow showers falling mainly above 600 metres by late afternoon. Winds will be strong then gale force from a South-South-Westerly direction. Observed Weather Influences: The freezing level was around 1100 metres and the winds were light, West-South-Westerly. A misty start this morning with some light drizzle then some brighter intervals, followed by more intermittent light showers some falling as sleet over the highest summits.

ObservedSnowStability: The slightly cooler overnight conditions have consolidated the snowpack which is now generally firm, well bonded and stable. Greatest snow amounts are present mainly on North to East aspects above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
