Avalanche Activity

GC24/3Snow showersS-SW wind windslab sheltered. summit gullies+NW-N-E slopes mainly 900m+ cornices fragile old snow firm Hazard Mod.

Forecast Snow Stability: Wind transport and snow showers will form unstable windslab in wind sheltered areas. Most affected will be summit gullies and on steeper scarp slopes with a mainly North-Westerly through North to Easterly aspect above 900 metres. Other areas may be affected by cross loading. The older snowpack which is mainly in the higher Northerly and Easterly corries will be firm and icy in places. Cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers will affect slopes above 1000 metres overnight and on Friday, amounts of new snow are not expected to be great. Winds will be fresh Southerly overnight becoming South-Westerly through the day. The freezing level will be around 1000-1100 metres. Observed Weather Influences: New snow and sleet affected slopes above 800 metres overnight, today has been largely dry with some clear periods. Winds have been fresh, generally from the South-West. During the period the freezing level has fluctuated roughly between 800 metres to 1100 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Isolated areas of unstable windslab exist in wind sheltered areas such as summit gully exits and on steep scarp slopes with a Northerly to Easterly aspect above 1000 metres. Below this level the snowpack is moist with shallow surface instabilities. Cornices are fragile. The avalanche hazard is Low. Light surface debris noted on Easterly aspects.
