Avalanche Activity

GC19/12 Wet snow instabilities on most steep slopes on all aspects above 750m. Cornices prone to collapse. Av haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: A rapid rise in the freezing levels accompanied by large amounts of rain and driving winds will saturate the snowpack. This will lead to wet snow instabilities on most steep slopes on all slope aspects above 750 metres where avalanches are likely. West through North to East aspects will be especially affected. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: This evening snow turning to sleet then rain as the freezing level rises to well above summits by the early hours. Monday, freezing level at around 2300 metres with rain at all levels accompanied by strong to gale force South-Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: It was dry this morning, light snow showers started falling mainly above 350 metres in the afternoon. The freezing level was around 500 metres with a fresh South-Easterly wind. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of poorly bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 800 metres. The tops of gullies, gully flanks and coire rims are particularly affected. Fragile cornices also exist on similar aspects. At lower elevations the shallow snow cover is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
