Avalanche Activity

GC 8/2 Poorly bonded windslab mainly in steep wind sheltered areas with a N to SE aspect above 900m. Avalanche hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: The surface layer of the older snowpack will refreeze but instabilities will persist in deep accumulations. New accumulations of poorly bonded windslab will develop mainly on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Greatest instabilities will continue to exist in steep wind sheltered locations such as coire rims, gully tops and ridge flanks. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight the freezing level will lower to around 500 metres. Light snow showers throughout the period with strong West-South-Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: Generally poor visibility. The freezing level rose above the summits and by midday it was plus 3 degrees celsius at 1100 metres. The Westerly winds strengthened as the day progressed with precipitation falling as light snow early morning quickly turning to rain at all levels. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack has started to consolidate in the milder conditions, however, windslab instabilities persist in deep accumulations. The areas mainly affected are North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Steep wind sheltered locations, especially coire rims, gully tops and ridge flanks are particularly affected. Cornices are becoming moist and unstable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
