The more recent wind slabs represent the main danger.
The more recent wind slabs represent the main danger.
The wind slabs of the weekend remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering in particular on northwest to north to east facing aspects above approximately 2400 m. These are mostly easy to recognise. Wind slabs can in some places be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. Above approximately 2800 m the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Dry avalanches can be released in deeper layers, in particular by large additional loads.
The fresh snow and the wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in some places. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads in particular on shady slopes.
As a consequence of snowfall above approximately 2400 m and the occasionally strong wind, the snowpack can not consolidate.
